Impact of virgin plastic tax on enterprises

New virgin plastic tax rules: environmental impact

The main aim of this new tax is to generate a significant positive impact on the environment. According to the Ministry for Ecological Transition, the increase in the final price of single-use products will lead to a 50% reduction in disposable products by 2026, and a 70% reduction by 2030.

In addition, the regulation aims to incentive development and research into new technologies that will lead to more sustainable recycling processes. It may even be the companies themselves that decide to invest in this type of advances to make their production processes more efficient and environmentally friendly.

Current virgin plastic tax regulations

The new tax was implemented on the 1st of January this year, and it will be applied on plastic products at a rate of 0.45 euros per kilogramme or virgin plastic.

Only those whose application is sanitary are exempt from this tax.

Packaging is considered to be any product that contains, protects, distributes or serves as a container for any type of goods. Therefore, it affects non-reusable packaging such as bags or trays, plastic semi-finished products and non-reusable packaging. Likewise, in order to be exempt from payment, the absence of virgin material must be justified with the certificate issued by the accredited entity.

Impact of virgin plastic tax on your business

The virgin plastic tax regulation is designed to promote recycling and the reduction of the use of oil in its production. It has a direct impact on businesses that produce or use it in their activity.

It can be a significant financial burden for certain companies. However, it is a great opportunity to improve their image and market positioning by demonstrating their commitment to sustainability and the environment.

From Gaviplas, we can help you to adapt your company

Facing this new sustainable perspective and adapting your production to the new regulations is not an easy task, especially at the beginning. So, when implementing the necessary measures and actions, it will be of great help to have suppliers and companies that manufacture packaging.  Work ahead to find the best alternatives or solutions to each client.

At Gaviplas we offer plastic products made with full environmental awareness. We have reduced the thickness of some products and reformulate their composition so they can be recycled.

We also look for the best recycled materials, following a very strict protocol to test their quality before using it, and propose adding it to the packaging, in different percentages, as a solution to use less virgin material, to promote circularity and to reduce the final cost of the tax.

All designed by and for sustainability.
